Match Report 07/01/23 by Peter Futter
Huntingdon Town 1 v 1 Great Yarmouth Town FC
With the A11 shut, it was a scenic 100 mile journey for the Bloaters via Dereham and Downham for they visit to 10th place Huntingdon Town’s Jubilee Park. With the Bloaters having won their last two games over the festive break and Huntingdon having lost last time out to Downham this was going to be an even game. The pitch looked heavy from the start with Huntington’s u18s having played on it in the morning.
Huntingdon were on the front foot from the kick off, and it didn’t take long for the early pressure to pay off, seven minutes in with pressure on the Yarmouth left and a scramble let the Huntingdon Skipper Jay Chilvers drive his effort across goal from the edge of the box to nestle in the bottom right corner. Though the first half Yarmouth where force to defend, and play on the break, with the Huntingdon front three having loads of pace to try to get round the back of the Yarmouth back four, full backs Tyler Halliday and Louie Duffield were forced to dig deep to keep these pacemen under control.
Yarmouth were forced into an early substitution with Carter Trenerry being replaced by young Jesse Fenn. All the play was really taking place in the midfield with neither team making clear cut chances.
Half time with the home team still leading 1-0 Yarmouth were still in it.
The second half began with a downpour of monsoon like proportions and this was reflected in a chance in the Yarmouth play, their game became more intense, closing down quicker & when they had the ball, it was passed quicker and forward. sixty minutes gone Beeson carded, Gerson Soares was brought on to replace Tyrese Melo. Ten minutes later Skipper Jordan Cantwell replaced by Sam Adams, this led to Reegan Perry going into midfield after a knock to Adam Willets forced him to move into the middle of the back four alongside Cameron Barnes, this started to put Huntingdon under pressure at the back and a through ball played in Ryan Beeson on his first full start for a while, into the box he went only to be brought down by the Huntingdon Keeper. Beeson gets up, places the ball on the spot and confidently converts with 75 minutes gone, 1-1.
The rain kept coming down and began to play an even bigger part. Willets was finally forced off with his knock and Troy Evans came on to play the last ten minutes. Keeper Lane was called into action at this time and was made to make a couple of saves to keep the score level till the end. The game was well controlled by referee Jack Couper.
